What should we do if my Japanese Truck Clutch is having trouble shifting gears?

The purpose of the Japanese Truck Clutch is to separate the transmission so the driver can shift gears. And it has; it has a job to do. If you are experiencing problems shifting gears, the clutch is not working properly and there is a problem. Clutch release problems can cause a variety of symptoms that can seriously affect the driver. If the clutch does not fully disengage, the brake disc will continue to spin and prevent the driver from putting the car into gear from neutral. Obviously, if the car is stuck in neutral, it will not go anywhere. This can also cause the gears to wear while the car is in gear and can cause the car to stall when it comes to a rolling stop. The clutch does not disengage from the flywheel, usually because of a leak in the hydraulic system or a bad connection somewhere.

What should we do if my Japanese Truck Clutch is not fully engaged?

A Japanese Truck Clutch that is not fully engaged or that slips under heavier loads can cause one of two things. This usually means that the friction disc is worn or the pressure plate has lost all tension. When the clutch is depressed, the diaphragm spring presses the friction disc against the flywheel. If the spring pressure is not high enough, or if there is too much clearance between the parts, there will not be enough friction to transfer power from the engine to the transmission. The friction disc wears thin and the spring becomes weak, which is when the clutch starts to slip. If it slips immediately without prior warning, it indicates an oil leak or something else has contaminated the friction disc. A Japanese Truck Clutch that does not engage at all means there is serious damage somewhere. Check for a bent connecting rod, a stuck slave cylinder, or a stuck striker bearing. In addition to this, check for binding of the connecting rod, corrosion of the cable or damage to the friction plate.

How does the Japanese Truck Clutch work?

The working principle of the Japanese Truck Clutch is very interesting and easy to understand. No torque/power is transmitted until the friction plates are in contact with each other, and it works very well. The clutch consists of two different plates, one mounted on the flywheel and the other moving on the crankshaft. The amount of torque applied is used to determine the amount of axial load applied to the friction plates. This means that the greater the axial load, the more power is transferred, and the lower the axial load, the less power is transferred.

The movable disc connected to the crankshaft by splines moves back and forth with the help of the clutch pedal. The load is applied by a pressure plate connected to several coil springs or a single diaphragm spring.

If the clutch pedal is fully depressed, the movable friction disc moves backwards from the axis disconnected from the flywheel. Since no axial load is applied by the pressure plate, no power/torque transmission is applied. This is why the engine can run without moving.

If the clutch pedal is fully released, the movable friction disc slides forward on the shaft to the flywheel. This is the state of engagement when the disc touches the flywheel.

The amount of working pressure applied also depends on how much the clutch pedal is depressed. This means that the amount of axial load applied by the pressure plate will be reflected in the power transferred.
